Jasmin Graham is a marine biologist (a scientist who studies the living things in the ocean). She does her research in Florida. She says about her research, "I study a group of animals called elasmobranchs, which are sharks, skates, and rays. I study how they move to figure out what habitats they use frequently so we can protect those habitats. I mostly study elasmobranchs that are endangered, or at risk of extinction, in hopes that my research can help us protect these vulnerable animals." She has done field research in Everglades National Park, Tampa Bay, Sarasota Bay, Florida Bay, Biscayne Bay, and the Florida Keys.
A scientist's job is to ask questions that we don't know the answers to and then work to find the answers through observation, experiments, and careful thinking. A scientific question that Jasmin would like to answer is: What areas along the Florida coast are important to endangered sawfish (a type of elasmobranch)?
