Kevin Kurtz is not a scientist.
Even though Kevin Kurtz writes about science, knows a lot about science, loves science, and even occasionally works with scientists to help them do their research, he is not a scientist himself. A scientist's job is to ask questions that we don't know the answers to and then work to find the answers through observation, experiments, and careful thinking. Kevin does not do this. Instead he learns about the cool things that scientists have discovered and then thinks about how to write and talk about these things in ways that will be interesting and fun for kids.
Scientists are also people who studied science in college. Most of them have PhDs in their specific scientific field, which means they studied how to do scientific research for at least ten years in college. Kevin went to college for six years, but his degrees are in English literature and elementary education.
There are many writers, artists, filmmakers, teachers, and other jobs that focus on science without the person being a scientist. If you love science, you may want to see what other science-related jobs are out there that may be of interest to you.
